As an industry veteran with over 240 audiobook title credits, John McLain knows how to tell a story.  Working from his studio outside Phoenix, he delights narrating across many genres: hard-boiled detective noir, compelling non-fiction, tales of the Old West, interesting stories of fascinating lives, the thrilling intrigue of espionage, inspiring accounts of faith, and much more.

John has been honored with nominations for the prestigious Audie® Award twice, and in 2018 was named a winner of the Voice Arts® Award and the Audiobook Reviewer Listeners’ Choice Award.  His work has also been recognized for audio excellence by Audiofile Magazine with the Earphones Award.

In addition to award-winning storytelling, John enjoys coaching fellow narrators.   Using his years of varied experience, he assists with things like character development, vocal instrument care, microphone technique, how to set-up and run a great home studio, or even how to get started as an audiobook performer.  He firmly believes that audiobook performance is one of the purest forms of acting, and one of the most challenging!  Thus he places a very high value on continuing education, and hones his craft with his own coaches frequently.  Further, John loves working directly with authors as they seek to bring their stories to the world of audio.

John grew up in rural Oklahoma, and still carries those sensibilities with him today.  He believes in honesty, fairness, hard work, and honoring commitments.  This integrity has become a hallmark of his business – his clients have remarked that when John signs his name, it’s as good as done.

John is a member of the Audio Publishers Association (APA) and SAG-AFTRA.
